Get ready for a Day Out with Thomas!

Thomas the Tank Engine, and all his friends on the Island of Sodor, are once again returning to the Illinois Railway Museum!

Day Out with Thomas brings the world of Thomas to McHenry County – if your children love Thomas and his friends, believe us, this event is not to be missed! Children can take a train ride on Thomas and his friend Percy, meet Sir Topham Hatt, and much, much more. And besides Thomas, many of the Railway Museum’s exhibits will be open – it’s one of the largest railway museums in the nation, if you didn’t know.

The event takes place the weekends of July 12-13, and July 19-20. Click here to learn more and to buy tickets.

Be there, or Sir Topham Hatt will be very cross.

Cary Stars ‘N Stripes Fest set for June 28

Ring in the Independence Day holiday a week early and enjoy an unforgettable day at the Stars ‘N Stripes Fest!

Cary’s annual bash takes place from 3 to 10 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at Cary-Grove Park, which is at Three Oaks Road and North First Street, next to Cary-Grove High School.

The festival includes a mouthwatering variety of cuisine from a dozen food trucks, a beer garden, live music, bounce houses, face painting and more, and a brilliant fireworks display to end the day. Sunburst Bay Aquatic Center will be open for the event.

Admission to the park is free, but parking is $20, cash only, and is available at the park, the high school, and Sunburst Bay. Admission to the aquatic center during the event is $10 for passholders, and $15 for non-passholders.

McHenry County seeking volunteers to set spongy moth traps

McHenry County is again looking for citizen scientists willing to help track the spread of spongy moths.

The county has received spongy moth traps from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and needs volunteers willing to put them up and monitor them through August. The traps are not intended to remove moths from an area – they are used to collect population data and help identify potential hot spots.

The voracious caterpillars of the invasive species, formerly known as gypsy moths, feed on more than 250 species of trees and other plants, but are well-known for devouring oak tree leaves.

Email Deputy County Administrator Scott Hartman at SEHartman@mchenrycountyil.gov if you would like to participate.
