EDC honors 2021 Business Champions!

Businesses that overcame and adapted to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic were honored with the McHenry County Economic Development Corp.‘s 2021 Business Champion awards.
The winner for companies with fewer than 25 employees was Enviro Sip Straw, of Woodstock, which developed a new kind of paper tailored for biodegradable drinking straws. Woodstock-based MAC Automation (25-100 employees) won for making fabric face coverings and other PPE for front-line workers, and Jessup Manufacturing, of McHenry, won in the 100- to 300-employee category for shifting to manufacturing materials for physical distancing graphics.
Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital (300 or more employees) rounded out the winners for their work in meeting the needs of the community during the pandemic, and developing a program to prepare young people with significant disabilities for employment success.

Governor signs Congressional remap into law

McHenry County will have twice the representation in the US House of Representatives, with a completely new cast of elected officials, under the remap signed into law by Governor Pritzker.
The remap taking effect with the upcoming midterm election splits McHenry County among four congressional districts: the 9th, 10th, 11th and 16th. You can see the state map here.
McHenry County for the past decade has been split between the 14th and 6th districts. Our incumbent representatives, Democrats Lauren Underwood and Sean Casten, will not be running in McHenry County.
Pritzker earlier this year approved the post-Census remap of Illinois House and Senate districts, but they have been challenged in federal court by several plaintiffs; the consolidated cases will be heard next week.

Kick-start your career through apprenticeships

It’s serendipitous that President Biden signed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Bill into law during National Apprenticeship Week earlier this month.
The law includes $74 billion for workforce development and the expansion of apprenticeship programs. If you’re looking to get paid while you learn a trade you can make a career out of, it’s a great time to get in on the ground floor.
To learn more about the wonderful (and expanding!) career paths apprenticeships present, visit the McHenry County Workforce Network, the McHenry County College apprenticeship program, and the Illinois workNet apprenticeship page at www.ApprenticeshipIL.com.
As a reminder, McHenry County College is holding virtual open houses throughout the winter for people who want to pursue an associate of applied science degree in engineering technology. The next open houses are scheduled for 5 p.m. Wednesday, and 5:30 p.m. Jan. 11. You can register for tomorrow’s open house here, and the January open house here.

Workforce Network releases 2021 Labor Report

Clients who completed McHenry County Workforce Network training programs earned more than $3.6 million in wages last fiscal year!
The good news is just one of the many nuggets of useful information that can be found in the Workforce Network’s annual labor report. The report, which covers the state FY21 fiscal year that ended June 30, can be found here.
Besides good news – like the $626,000 given in business grants and the 180 jobs saved by COVID-19 relief grants – the annual report is a gold mine of information for McHenry County employers that includes data on worker demographics, trends, and in-demand skills.
Visit the Workforce Network’s website at www.mchenrycountyworkforce.com to see the many programs they have to offer, and to view the success stories of people who found meaningful careers with their help.

Luminaria Walk starts at Veterans Acres

With the lifting of COVID-19 capacity restrictions earlier this year, Resume McHenry County is featuring the return of its iconic and traditional attractions, and the founding of new ones.
Starting tomorrow and lasting through Saturday, Veterans Acres Park will ring in December ablaze with light.
A three-quarter-mile trail will be lined with luminaria, starting at the park’s picnic shelter from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. all four days.
The final day Saturday will include campfires, cookies, hot cocoa, a candy cane forest, and carolers from Encore Music Academy!
The cost is free and registration is not required, but organizers are requesting a small donation to fund the Crystal Lake Park District’s future outdoor education programs.
In case of inclement weather, call 815-410-4475 or visit www.rainoutline.com for cancellation information.
