Advance McHenry County grants jump starts D-155 jobs program
Applications for Advance McHenry County funding grants are still open! Click here to learn more and to apply!
Community High School District 155’s more than 5,600 students will be able to explore more career options – especially in the nursing field – thanks to the Advance McHenry County program.
The district, which includes Crystal Lake Central, Crystal Lake South, Cary-Grove and Prairie Ridge high schools, is receiving $1.5 million to develop its Career Experiences program to help students gain valuable skills and learn about career opportunities after high school.
The plan includes creating a certified nursing assistant program to give students direct access to certifications and job opportunities, and will be backed up with the building of a state-of-the-art training facility that simulates an actual hospital or long-term care facility to help students in their studies.
Click here to learn more about Advance McHenry County, which is distributing millions in federal COVID-19 funding directly into our communities. District 155’s award is one of three the County Board approved last month in its first round – and the County Board is expected to award more in February! We’ll be telling every one of their stories in future editions of our e-newsletter, so stay tuned!
Senator Duckworth talks Metra rail yard, infrastructure in Woodstock
U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth visited Woodstock Opera House last Friday to discuss McHenry County’s long-sought project to relocate the Metra rail yard from Crystal Lake to Woodstock.
Moving from the landlocked downtown Crystal Lake yard to a new site northwest of Woodstock would allow Metra to double its train capacity on the Union Pacific-Northwest Line, which could mean more riders, less traffic congestion, and another incentive for businesses to relocate or expand along the route.
The approval of the Rebuild Illinois capital plan, and the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, present a unique opportunity to push for funding to move this forward. Thank you to Sen. Duckworth and the rest of McHenry County’s delegations in Congress and the Illinois General Assembly for their help!
Officials also briefed Sen. Duckworth about the next phase of widening Randall Road, as well as the widening of Route 47 through Woodstock.

There will be no tax deadline extension this year
While the IRS pushed back tax day in 2020 and 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the third year isn’t going to be a charm.
The IRS will not be postponing the filing deadline this year, meaning Americans have until Monday, April 18 to file. The three-day extension from the traditional April 15 date is on account of the Emancipation Day holiday observed in Washington, D.C.
The filing deadline for people who request a deadline extension is Oct. 17.
Woodstock Willie gives his prognostication tomorrow
At 7 a.m. tomorrow morning, McHenry County’s most famous rodent will tell the throngs of spectators filling Woodstock Square whether we will have an early spring or six more weeks of winter.
(With the past couple of years we’ve had, Woodstock Willie will go with early spring, if he knows what’s good for him.)
The prognostication kicks off a day of festivities concluding the annual six-day festival commemorating the filming of the classic film Groundhog Day in Woodstock. Events include a free walking tour of movie locations, a showing of the film, and the opportunity to get a commemorative shot glass for ordering a drink in the name of world peace.
