Groundhog Days 2025 is coming – with a special guest and new twist!

Old and new come together for Woodstock Groundhog Days

The time has come once again for one of McHenry County’s most unique events – Woodstock’s annual celebration of the Harold Ramis cult classic film that made the city famous. And this year, an old friend and a new event will make this year’s Woodstock Groundhog Days one to remember!

Actor Stephen Tobolowsky, who played pushy and hapless insurance salesman Ned Ryerson, will be in town Feb. 1 for a meet and greet at Read Between the Lynes to talk about the film and sign copies of his books. Stephen has made multiple appearances at the festivities over the years – if you’re new to Groundhog Days, you can find the film site where he runs into weatherman Phil Connors day after day on the northeast corner of the Square, at the intersection of North Benton and Cass streets.

And new this year is the inaugural Groundhog Days 5K run for people who want to mix their love of visiting the movie sites with their love of running – a love of freezing your tail feathers off is not required, but recommended.

While the official prognostication starts at 6:30 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 2 on the Square, it’s just a small part of the four-day celebration starting Jan. 30, from tours of sites shown in the movie to a pancake breakfast, a children’s storytime, and lots of other fun – and, of course, screenings of the movie.

You can find the list of events on the Woodstock Groundhog Days website, its Facebook page, or on the website of our friends at Naturally McHenry County.

McHenry County shows its heart at annual Keltner blood drive

Once again, donors from across McHenry County answered the call to honor the memory of fallen McHenry County Sheriff’s Deputy Keltner by donating blood.

The Red Cross collected 221 pints of blood last Saturday at the sixth annual Jake Keltner Memorial Blue Blood Drive, held at the Sage YMCA in Crystal Lake. Because one unit of blood can save up to three people, that’s up to 663 lives that can be saved by the generous donors.

Bad winter weather over the past few weeks has forced the cancellation of hundreds of blood drives – the Red Cross told organizers that they’re very thankful that McHenry County stepped up to the plate and made this year’s drive happen.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to honor Deputy Keltner’s memory by helping others. If you missed it, you can donate blood any time of the year, and the need is always great – visit www.redcrossblood.org to find sites and times near you and schedule a donation.

Storm chaser Reed Timmer comes to Woodstock Opera House

Most of us haven’t seen a tornado up close – and that’s a fact for which we should be extremely grateful. But storm chaser Reed Timmer goes out of his way to seek them out.

Reed is known for starring in the reality TV series Storm Chasers, as well as other documentaries and shows regarding tornadoes. As part of his adventures, he has built the Dominator series of armored storm chasing vehicles that can survive direct contact with a tornado.

While you’re not going to see a tornado in Woodstock in February, you can come out to the Woodstock Opera House at 7:30 Jan. 24 to see Reed and hear his stories. Tickets are $35, and you can purchase them by clicking here.
