County municipalities eligible for $38 million in ARPA funding
McHenry County municipalities are eligible to receive a total of $38 million in COVID-19 relief under the American Rescue Plan Act.
The state announced last Thursday that 1,250 municipal governments that have not already received ARPA aid can apply for their share of the $742 million allocated for Illinois under the act, which became law in March.
Municipalities must have fewer than 50,000 people to qualify. They can use the funds to recoup losses directly related to pandemic response or to assist the financial recovery of homes and businesses. The funds also can be used to invest in building, maintaining, or upgrading water, sewer and broadband infrastructure.
Eligible governments have until the end of September to apply through the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity for the funding. The first half will be distributed 30 days after approval, and the other half will be disbursed a year later.
McHenry County last year entered into an agreement with the McHenry County Council of Governments to work together to explore improved government cooperation to increase efficiency and lower costs. MCOG Executive Director Chalen Daigle, who also serves as the county coordinator, will be reaching out to eligible municipalities to assist them as needed to take advantage of the funding.
