Disability Job Fair is a success

More than 70 job seekers visited with 24 participating employers at the Disability Job Fair on Oct. 5.

The job fair, held at the McHenry County College Shah Center, connects people with any type of disability with employers looking to hire. At least 40 resumes and applications were accepted by employers, many of whom have scheduled job interviews.

For the first time, the job fair included a skills assessment activity so that job seekers could physically demonstrate their aptitude in areas such as quality control, assembly, data entry, typing and other skills. Job seekers and employers alike showed great interest and enthusiasm in these activities.

Our friends at the McHenry County Workforce Network created a short video recapping the event – you can click above to watch it!

Advance McHenry County summer internship program flourished

The first-ever Summer Rotational Internship Program far exceeded expectations!

In total, 89 high-school students from throughout McHenry County participated in the paid, 10-week program. Nineteen county manufacturers opened their doors to give these kids, ages 16 to 18, an opportunity to explore manufacturing careers. In fact, several of the students are continuing to work for a host company, both part-time and full-time!

A $717,300 grant through the Advance McHenry County program to the Manufacturing Pathways Consortium and McHenry County College made this possible. We can’t wait to see this program grow!

New FEMA flood rating translates to insurance savings

Residents and business owners in unincorporated areas will see their flood insurance premiums decrease by 20% from the standard rates, thanks to McHenry County’s continued floodplain management efforts.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency raised McHenry County’s rating in the National Flood Insurance Program Community Rating System to Class 6. The increase translates to a significant discount for most flood insurance premiums; the greater a government’s investment in reducing flood risk, the greater the insurance savings.
